Aikatsu Stars! Episode 69 Review: Wasted Opportunity

As you may have noticed I stopped making episode reviews for Aikatsu Stars! season 2 and the reason for that is part laziness. But with that said though, I’ll make a review of the entirety of season 2, or maybe make a review of the first and second half. Though… I still need to watch Aikatsu Stars! past episode 58… And yeah, I’m that far away.

Anyway, after hearing the anime is doing a two-episode crossover special with the OG cast and having seen the first episode of the special (raw, obviously), I think I’ll make a review of it now. Please bear in mind I skipped a lot of episodes, so I cannot comment regarding the continuity of the story. But one thing is for certain though: The crossover happened because the Aikatsu! anime(?) series is celebrating its 5th year.

Our beloved idols are back in Minaminoshima Island for another Aikatsu Island event, so I guess the event is an annual thing now. Yume, Rola and Mahiru are stranded but thankfully a seemingly familiar van was nice enough to give them a lift, and the two worlds collide.

At first it’s very amusing to see Yume, Rola and Mahiru talk with Akari, Sumire and Hinaki, and there are a few scenes where the girls paired and talked about random stuff while looking for four leafed clovers. Yume talks about a senpai she idolized with Akari, Rola is paired up with Sumire because, I dunno, they fill the same roles as supporting characters, and Hinaki and Mahiru adding accessories to a pair of dowsing rods and both are models. But things never progressed interestingly like bringing up topics why they never heard of Starlight School, no subtle jokes around similar sounding characters. The girls did share some of their experience and views, but it’s not minor considering the scope of this episode.

CONCLUSION

This is a crossover special and it should be exciting, funny, fast-paced, and fanservice-ey like tossing jokes or make references, or even putting Luminas on stage and let them dance together with the Stars girls. But no, they were just running around looking for clovers and Luminas never really contributed to the live concert or anything to leave an impression. Yeah, sure Yume learned a lot from Akari and that speech at the end was inspiring to Yume, but yeah, that’s it. This episode was unspectacular and there was no oomph to make me say “Damn, that was good.”

The best part of the episode that never happened.

OG AIKATSU AND AIKATSU STARS SHARE THE SAME UNIVERSE?

First things first: How the hell did they not know the other exist? Surely they would’ve notice, surely Aoi, who is the Idol Professor, would’ve noticed there are other high profile idols and schools out there, but what’s up with the blackout? Do they even use the internet or watch TV? I was reminded of that Stars episode where the girls never heard of Lily, a high profile idol in Four Star Academy, until Ako checked the archives.

I do believe the idols are in the same universe and this episode is not a random OVA or a separate TV special or even a movie like one of the PreCure crossovers. This episode is part of Aikatsu Stars! season 2 as episode 69, so whatever is happening in this episode may be canon. If this special was a separate entity, then yeah, maybe it’s not canon. But it is canon, and that means…

HOLY SHIT AOI IS IN THE NEXT EPISODE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF AOI, RAN AND ICHIGO RETURNING AND SHARING THE SAME TIMELINE AS STARS IS VERY HIGH!!! <3 <3 <3
